Behind The Lyrics: FARCRY
Castle Keep
i wrote castle keep during my time in college, where i felt like the group i was in wasn’t really my people. deep down i knew that, but i still kept the mask on. i definitely learnt a lot in college, about myself, the people around me and just life in general. i think a lot of what i felt during that time ended up making its way into this song.
Can’t Laugh
can’t laugh was a conflicting song to write considering i hated pretty much all my peers at school, even the group i was yearning to be in. i think it was just the popularity that was appealing to me more than anything.
writing a song about wanting to be part of a group that i actually hated at the time was difficult. it felt weird admitting that i wanted their acceptance when i didn’t even really like them.
Crush
when it came to writing crush, it wasn’t a situation where i wanted to just have a song about love on the album because it felt fitting. i was actually in love.
initially i didn’t even want love to be a factor on farcry, but the crush i had was literally so intense that it was non negotiable that i had to write it. that song literally happened so naturally because the feeling was so intense, everything kinda just fell out onto the microphone.
even though that crush has passed, that song still remains one of my proudest moments sonically and lyrically. i think sometimes the songs you don’t really have to force end up being the ones you’re most proud of.
Up
up was another raw one. even though the song is generally about body image, i was facing a lot of backlash over my weight, and people i didn’t even fucking know that well would just heckle me and make vile comments like it was nothing.
i wasn’t even sad about it when writing the song, i was angry.
that song comes from a heavy period of my life that’ll always be hard to shake. there’s a lot of anger in it because at the time i genuinely didn’t understand how people could say those things to me and just carry on like it was nothing.
